Frequently Asked Questions about E71T-5C

Why choose E71T-5C over E71T-1C for critical work?

E71T-5C is a basic (low-hydrogen) type wire, which offers superior low-temperature impact toughness (down to -40°C) and extremely low diffusible hydrogen (≤4 ml/100g). This makes it the preferred choice for high-restraint joints, thick sections, and applications requiring resistance to cold cracking — such as offshore, bridges, and pressure vessels. E71T-1C (rutile) is more user-friendly but does not provide the same level of toughness or hydrogen control.

What shielding gas is required? Can I use mixed gas?

E71T-5C is formulated specifically for 100% CO₂ shielding gas. Using CO₂ ensures proper deoxidation, arc stability, and mechanical properties. While argon/CO₂ mixes may be used in some cases, they can alter the slag behavior and impact toughness; therefore, 100% CO₂ at 18–25 L/min is strongly recommended for certified performance.

How should E71T-5C be stored to maintain low hydrogen?

Store in original unopened packaging in a dry warehouse (humidity <60%). Once opened, use within 8 hours, or store in a holding oven at 120–150°C. If the wire has been exposed to moisture, it can be rebaked at 300–350°C for 1–2 hours. Always follow the storage guidelines to preserve the low hydrogen characteristic (H4).

What base materials is E71T-5C suitable for?

It is ideal for carbon and mild steels such as ASTM A36, A572 Gr.50/60, A516, API 5L X42–X65, and European grades S235–S355. It can also be used for some high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels with proper procedure qualification. For post-weld heat-treated applications, consult our engineering support.
